PTA phone registration vs type approval: which one do you need?

Phone registration (DIRBS) is for your own handset; type approval is for a device model a business imports or sells. Learn which one applies to you.

"PTA approved" can mean two very different things in Pakistan. One is about a single phone that you own. The other is about a device model that a business wants to import, make or sell. Knowing which one applies saves time, money and a lot of back-and-forth.

The short answer

  • Phone registration (DIRBS) is for one handset, identified by its IMEI number. It matters when you bring a phone from abroad or buy one that is not yet registered.
  • Type approval is for a whole device model. It matters when a business imports, manufactures or sells phones, WiFi routers, dongles, trackers or other wireless equipment in Pakistan.

Many people search for "PTA approval" when they only need to register their own phone, and many importers assume a registered sample is enough to sell a model. Neither is right.

Personal phone registration (DIRBS)

PTA's Device Identification, Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS) keeps track of every handset by its IMEI. A phone that is not registered can be blocked on Pakistani mobile networks.

When you need it

  • You brought a phone with you from abroad.
  • Someone sent you a phone from another country.
  • You are buying a used phone and want to be sure it will keep working.

How to check a phone's status

  1. Dial *#06# to see the IMEI number (dual-SIM phones show two).
  2. Send the IMEI by SMS to 8484, or check it on the DIRBS website or app.
  3. Before you buy a phone inside Pakistan, make sure its status shows it as compliant or registered.

How registration works

Registration is done through the DIRBS website, together with payment of any duty and taxes that apply to the phone. The DIRBS website only opens from inside Pakistan. Rules such as time limits, temporary registration for visitors and tax amounts change from time to time, so check the current details on PTA's DIRBS website before you start.

Type approval for businesses

Type approval is PTA's permission for a specific device model to be used, imported or sold in Pakistan. It covers both imported and locally manufactured terminal equipment, and it is granted model by model: a new model, or a changed model, needs its own approval.

Who needs it

  • Importers and distributors of phones, WiFi routers, access points, hotspots and SIM-based devices.
  • Local manufacturers and assemblers.
  • Foreign manufacturers entering the Pakistani market, usually through a local representative or importer who holds the approval.

What PTA typically asks for

  • A declaration of conformity and a technical description of the model.
  • Test reports for the standards the device meets, such as radio, EMC and safety reports from recognised laboratories.
  • Product photographs, specifications and a sample of the device.
  • For IMEI-based devices such as phones and SIM-based trackers, details that link the model to its IMEI range.

Approved devices carry PTA's type approval number and marking. Exact documents depend on the device category, so read PTA's type approval FAQs for the current list.

Common mistakes

  • Treating a registered sample as permission to sell the model. Selling a model needs type approval.
  • Assuming one approval covers a whole product range. Each model is approved separately.
  • Sending test reports that do not match the exact model, variant or standards in the application.
  • Sharing passwords, one-time codes or full identity documents with anyone who offers "fast approval". Official registration never needs your account passwords.
